CAM safety checklist

A practical checklist for stock, origins, cutters, simulation and exported G-code.

The operator owns the result

CAM output is a manufacturing instruction, not a guarantee. The operator is responsible for checking the design, cutter, stock, workholding, machine limits and generated motion before running a job.

Stock setup and clearance

  • Confirm the physical stock dimensions and thickness.
  • Confirm the selected job origin matches the point that will be zeroed on the machine.
  • Check Safe Z and service/park height against clamps, fixtures and available Z travel.
  • Make sure all intended geometry fits inside the stock.

Operations and tools

  • Confirm every operation uses the intended source geometry.
  • Check cutter type, diameter, flute length and usable cutting length.
  • Review depth per pass, feed rate, plunge rate and spindle settings.
  • Keep inside and pocket work ahead of the final outside cut whenever appropriate.
  • Confirm tabs or another workholding strategy will retain released parts.

Verify before cutting

Use the 2D and 3D previews, material-removal animation and export preflight. Inspect the resulting G-code with an independent viewer when possible. Look specifically for unexpected rapid moves, excessive depth, missing retracts and the wrong work origin.

A successful preview does not model every clamp, fixture, machine limit or real-world failure mode.

At the machine

Secure the stock, install and measure the correct tool, set the work origin, verify spindle direction and keep an emergency stop within reach. Run cautiously above the stock or use the controller’s dry-run procedure before committing to material.
