Rosette Designer

Build a physical rosette from independent mosaic bands and ordered measured veneer strips in Cadivari.

Recommended test

Open CAD → Tools → Rosette designer, then check the first complete design loop.

  1. Paint several cells with different veneer colours. Drag while painting and confirm each crossed cell updates.
  2. Add a veneer strip inside and outside the mosaic. Confirm both appear as separate measured layers without overlap.
  3. Add a mosaic inside and outside the selected layer. Paint different patterns in each and confirm selecting a row restores that band's independent editor and calculations.
  4. Use the small copy icon before a mosaic row's up/down controls. Confirm the duplicate appears directly outside it and becomes selected, then edit the copy and confirm the original remains unchanged.
  5. Select a strip, change its material and width, then duplicate and reorder it. Confirm the full preview follows the stack order immediately. Unselected veneers should use their exact filled width without a perimeter stroke; the selected strip should receive only a thin amber outline clipped inside its geometry.
  6. Delete the mosaic while strips remain and confirm a veneer-only rosette still previews. Use Add mosaic band to restore the tile editor.
  7. Try Erase, Fill, and Pick. Pick should select a cell's material and return to Paint.
  8. Right-click a tile, choose Replace all matching tiles, then select another veneer colour. Every tile using the clicked colour should change together as one undoable edit.
  9. Click a veneer swatch in the Band stack and choose a material to update that strip immediately. Right-click a veneer row and use Replace all matching veneers; only veneer strips with that colour should change, while mosaic cells remain untouched.
  10. Use the header Undo and Redo buttons. Confirm tile edits and dimension changes restore predictably without affecting CAD history.
  11. Change rows or columns. Existing cells should remain at the upper-left and new cells should use light veneer.
  12. Set a non-square grid such as 15 columns by 9 rows. With equal cell width and height, confirm every editor cell remains square and the editor adopts the tile's wider physical proportion.
  13. Change cell width or height. Confirm the circular preview and taper values update immediately in millimetres.
  14. Switch between Auto and Manual tile count and confirm the current fitted count carries across without blanking the preview. Reduce Manual repeats by two and confirm one unchanged tile disappears from each side of the opening rather than the remaining tiles stretching.
  15. Change the tile width while Manual is active and confirm the count is capped to the number of unchanged tiles that physically fit.
  16. While Manual is active, increase the Gap target and confirm it remains editable and lowers the maximum repeat count when necessary.
  17. Switch between Slip and Book match. Book match should reverse every second installed tile.
  18. Change the soundhole or mosaic diameter. Confirm invalid overlap produces a clear warning instead of a broken preview.
  19. Move the Outer gap target slider from its 20 mm default. Confirm the complete band stack ends on two clean, outlined radial wedge cuts and the requested width is measured across the widest outer edge. Between those ends, confirm the normally hidden full-circle routed channel retains almost the same spruce floor texture while restrained shadows along its inner, outer, and tapered walls suggest a 2 mm-deep groove. The installed rosette itself should remain unshaded. In Auto, confirm the two clipped end tiles are counted as whole repeats. In Manual, confirm the same target remains the maximum tile-count boundary. At 0 mm, confirm the small physical residual is reported instead of stretching tiles to force closure.
  20. In Live Installation, use the quiet eye button to hide and restore the amber active-band outline. Normal band boundaries should remain visible.
  21. Use the ruler button beside the eye. Confirm every arrowhead body stays inside its measured span while its tip points outward toward the measured boundary. One Outer gap dimension should span only the widest opening between the two outer wedge endpoints. The soundhole diameter should run through its centre with a centre tick and its value above the line; the soundhole-plus-lip diameter should use the same clean line style just below it without long endpoint extensions. The lip label should sit just inside the soundhole beside its short radial arrow. The remaining arrows should identify the full rosette outer diameter and total radial rosette width. Zoom and pan and confirm the measurements remain attached to the model.
  22. Use the image button beside the ruler and eye to enable the soundboard background. Confirm the small Spruce and Cedar text links appear below it and switch the centred texture immediately. Both grain photographs should keep the same physical model scale while zooming and panning; the lip should show wood, the soundhole should remain solid black, and the technical grid should stay hidden. Toggle the image button off and confirm both links disappear and the dark gridded background returns.
  23. Zoom with the wheel around the pointer, drag with the left or middle mouse button to pan, then use Fit to restore the complete ring.
  24. Edit the rosette name and confirm the amber unsaved dot appears. Use Save and confirm a `.cadiv-rosette` file is created.
  25. Change a cell, use Save As, then use Open to reload either file. Confirm every band, material, cell, dimension, repeat mode, count, and opening setting returns exactly.
  26. Try opening a renamed JSON file or damaged rosette file. Confirm validation reports the problem and the current design is not replaced.
  27. Close and reopen the designer. The current in-app draft should remain available.
  28. Return to CAD, select a soundhole circle, then choose Tools → Place rosette and open the saved design. Confirm the ghost is centred on the circle, reports a diameter mismatch when appropriate, and places with one click at exact physical size.
  29. After placement, confirm the Objects list contains linked inner and outer rosette-channel circles at the saved diameters. If a plausible concentric channel pair existed before placement, confirm its same objects were resized instead of duplicated.
  30. Open CAM → Operations → Add pocket, click between the two channel circles, and confirm a normal annular Region pocket is prepared. With a cutter narrower than the channel, confirm 2D, 3D, material animation, and G-code follow one complete circular channel while preserving the soundhole area.
  31. Move the linked soundhole circle and confirm the artwork and both channel circles follow it. Select the rosette, toggle Artwork, then save and reopen the main project. Confirm the embedded design, exact circles, and links are preserved.

01 · BAND STACK

One ordered physical assembly

The stack is always listed from inside to outside. Mosaic height and veneer-strip width become real radial dimensions, and Cadivari derives the inner and outer radius of every following layer automatically. Add either type on the inside or outside of the selected layer, duplicate common sequences, or reorder layers without positioning circles by hand.

Every mosaic owns an independent tile grid, dimensions, repeat style, and fitted count calculated at its derived radius. Every veneer strip is a physical band rather than a zero-width display line, with an adjustable width from 0.1 to 5 mm. A design may contain any combination of mosaics and strips, including veneer-only rosettes. Click a strip's colour swatch for its quick palette, or right-click its row to replace every veneer strip using that material. Bulk veneer replacement is intentionally separate from mosaic colour replacement.

02 · MOSAIC TILE

Independent pixel-style editors

Select any mosaic row to reveal its own editor. A new tile starts as a 10 × 10 grid of 0.5 × 0.5 mm veneer pieces, making a physical 5 × 5 mm tile. Paint, dimensions, repeat mode, and Auto or Manual count belong only to the selected mosaic. Duplicate copies the complete pattern into a new independent band that can then be changed safely.

Right-click any cell for tile-level actions. Replace all matching tiles swaps every occurrence of that cell's material for another palette veneer in one undoable change, making colour studies fast without repainting the motif. The second action picks the clicked material and returns to Paint.

Millimetres remain the source

The grids are not merely decorative pixels. Every cell has a physical width and height. Changing an installed count adds or removes complete unchanged tiles; it never rescales that band's pattern.

03 · LIVE INSTALLATION

Closed or open beneath the fretboard

The shared stack inner diameter anchors every band. The opening uses one aligned radial cut through every mosaic and veneer layer, and the requested gap is measured across the widest outer edge. Auto preserves the physical tile size, clips the two end tiles symmetrically into clean wedges, and still counts both pieces as whole installed tiles. Manual controls the repeat count directly while the active outer-gap target remains its upper boundary.

The selected band is highlighted in the preview. Mosaic calculations report physical tile size, radial position, fitted count, target and actual outer gap, visible arc, and taper. Veneer calculations report material, exact width, radii, and visible arc. The optional ruler overlay adds attached arrow dimensions for the gap, soundhole, lip, and complete rosette envelope. The optional soundboard overlay switches between centred, optimized spruce and cedar photographs at one fixed model-space scale, leaving the soundhole black while showing wood through the lip and fretboard opening. Use pointer-centred wheel zoom and left- or middle-button drag panning to inspect thin strips; Fit restores the complete assembly.

04 · PROJECT FILE

One portable rosette design

The editable name in the header drives a safe standalone .cadiv-rosette filename. Save updates the current desktop file, while Save As chooses a new location; browser builds download the same portable JSON document. Open validates the file version, millimetre units, palette references, bands, and every mosaic cell before replacing the current design.

The format preserves design intent

Mosaic patterns, physical cell sizes, independent repeat settings, manual counts, veneer order and widths, materials, soundhole diameter, stack diameter, and fretboard opening are stored exactly. Placing a saved rosette embeds a complete snapshot in the main .cadiv drawing, so the project does not depend on the original external file remaining available.

05 · CAD INSTALLATION

Place the finished design and match its channel

In CAD, optionally select the intended soundhole circle before choosing Tools → Place rosette. Open a saved rosette file, move the ghost over a circle to snap concentrically, and click once. The artwork remains at 1:1 physical scale; Cadivari does not stretch it to fit a different soundhole.

The same placement creates exact stack-inner and stack-outer circles as normal CAD geometry. When one or two plausible concentric channel circles already exist close to the saved dimensions, Cadivari reuses and corrects them instead of adding duplicates. Otherwise it creates the missing boundaries. The installation and both circles are stored in one undoable edit.

A linked installation follows the centre of its soundhole when that circle moves, and its channel circles follow with it. Properties show the soundhole, exact channel diameters, total width, source file, centre and rotation. A mismatch warning remains visible when the circle diameter differs from the saved design. Editing CX or CY deliberately detaches the complete installation for free placement.

Real CAD boundaries, one relationship

The two channel circles appear in Objects, SVG/PDF linework, stock sizing, snapping, and CAM like other circles. Their dimensions are owned by the saved rosette design, so select the rosette installation to move or remove the linked set rather than editing either boundary independently.

06 · CAM CHANNEL

Use the ordinary annular pocket workflow

Switch to CAM, open Operations, choose Add pocket, then click between the linked inner and outer channel circles. Cadivari highlights the same annular face it would detect between any two nested circles and prepares a normal Region pocket. Cutter, depth, stepdown, stepover, ramp entry, roughing allowance and wall finishing remain fully editable.

The route is a complete circular channel because the physical groove is normally cut before the decorative assembly is installed. The artwork's fretboard opening remains a presentation detail and does not break the cutter path. Moving the linked soundhole updates both source circles, so the stored ordinary CAM reference follows without a rosette-specific operation type.

Verify the real route

Select a cutter narrower than the channel and set the real rosette thickness, stepdown, soundboard, cutter, feed, spindle and workholding before export. If the cutter cannot fit between the two boundaries, Cadivari blocks creation.

CURRENT BOUNDARY

A flexible stack with room to grow

This iteration supports any number of independent mosaic bands and veneer strips, including veneer-only designs, standalone versioned Save/Open files, exact-size embedded CAD installations, automatically matched circular channel geometry, and ordinary annular CAM pockets. Compound strip presets, modern freeform segments, a reusable library, rich presentation export, partial or non-circular installation channels, and automatic cutter recommendations remain later steps.
