One idea from sketch to toolpath

Associativity is most valuable when it removes translation work between drawing, modelling and machining.

A typical small-workshop job is not complicated because any one step is difficult. It is complicated because a small change must be repeated across drawing, model, stock setup, toolpath and documentation.

Start with geometry that carries meaning

A closed sketch is more than visible linework. It can define a face, become an extrusion, drive a loft, establish a pocket region or describe a contour. Reusing that definition removes an entire class of copy-and-align mistakes.

Keep the manufacturing decision separate

The same boundary can support different outcomes. An outside contour, an inside contour and a pocket are manufacturing interpretations of geometry—not properties the sketch should have to guess in advance.

The CAD model says what exists. CAM says how this machine and cutter should make it.

Revision is the real test

When a profile changes, linked features should rebuild, invalid operations should become explicit, and machine output should require fresh verification. A system is not truly associative if it silently leaves old downstream data looking valid.

A practical sequence

  1. Draw or import the source geometry.
  2. Resolve closed paths and dimensions.
  3. Create solid features only where they add understanding.
  4. Define stock, origin and cutter.
  5. Create operations and establish their safe order.
  6. Simulate motion and material, then export.
